Five Apps to Help You Live Sustainably

We’ve practically been beaten over the head with the word “sustainability.” It can get quite redundant when everyone is repeating the same thing. Recycle! Avoid Fast Fashion! Save the turtles! This all gets a bit overwhelming at times, and although living sustainably is important, it can get pricey—especially when you’re living on a budget (like most college students).

However, nobody really tells you the ways in which you can find sustainable brands and products in an easy and affordable way.

Here are five free apps that will help you on your journey to a sustainable life:

1. Good on You
Good On You is a great way to search for any brand you desire and review a score based on three categories: Labour, Environment and Animal ratings, which are based on information that the brand has released. If you are unhappy with the score of a brand, Good on You will suggest others that may be similar to what you’re looking for.

2. Faer
Faer makes it possible not only to browse from a shopping gallery, but to search specific styles and upload your own pictures of certain garments. This will help you find options that best suit what you’re looking for. Faer’s main goal is to feature brands that show transparency and use sustainable dyes and fabrics.

3. Healthy Living
Healthy Living is geared more towards sustainable beauty, self-care and food products. It allows you to scan any barcode or search for whichever product you desire. Healthy Living will tell you how sustainable the item is on a scale of 1-10 (1 being the best!)

4.  Good Guide
Good Guide is another great way to get an in-depth rating of different brands by scanning a barcode, similar to Healthy Living. This will allow you to discover whether or not the brand produces their products in a safe, green, healthy and ethical way. The app uses science as well, as it utilizes public information to generate ratings.

5. Done Good
Done Good is yet another app that allows you to find items through brands that value sustainability. Done Good allows you to pick from a wide selection of “values” such as Eco Friendly, Vegan, Empowered Workers, and many more. After choosing your values, the app will show you a selection of brands that best fit your needs and selected values!

Sustainable shopping doesn't have to be intimidating or expensive. With these free apps, you won’t have to stress about your wallet—or the world.
