Loc It Up!
The faux loc and goddess loc trend is taking the beauty world by storm. Superstars from Rihanna to Zendaya to Meagan Good are getting into dreadlocks.
Rihanna has been seen rocking it on the set of her new feature film Ocean’s 8 and rocks it well. Zendaya first rocked her faux locs at the 2015 Oscars, which also sparked some controversy due to E!News host Guiliana Rancic criticizing her locs. Meagan Good rocks faux locs and goddess locs all the time. The goddess loc look is what she loves the most, and you can see her with blonde locs at any red-carpet event.
There are different methods to achieving the perfect loc look. There’s a wrapping and a crochet method. Some people may use yarn, Kenekalon hair, or Marley hair to do the wrapping method. I had faux locs two times so far and loved it both times. I tried the wrapping with yarn method first, and the second time I had an individual crochet look. My best friend Sandy Thermidor says, “I like faux locs because they are a protective style and you get to look different and feel different in a beautiful way.”
I got the chance to speak to professional hairstylist and faux loc expert Nikhol about faux locs:
Q: Where are you located?
A: Brooklyn, New York in Bushwick.
Q: How long have you been doing faux locs?
A: 5 years
Q: How much do you usually charge?
A: It varies on style and length. If someone wants regular faux locs, they have the option of choosing medium width or small width. once they choose which thickness they want, they choose a length between a bob & 30 inches (hair not included), but I will say this, my cheapest price is $200 for any of my services. Goddess locs on the other hand have a flat rate of $400, hair included. $400 is also my highest price.
Q: How long would it take to achieve a look?
A: That is also contingent on how long they want their hair or what style they get. As far as faux locs go, my shortest installment time is 3 and a half hours, and my longest is 6 hours. For a goddess loc, an installment generally takes 6 to7 hours.
Q: What do you like most about faux locs?
A: Well, I have real dreads and they helped me to embrace more of who I am without making my hair do what it doesn't want to do. Weaves and such tend to make you look like a whole other person. Our hair isn't naturally straight; it's thick, maybe curly, but not bone straight. So I figured, what more beautiful of a way to transition back to acceptance of self than a style that helps to better embrace what our hair can naturally do AS IS?
So if you’re looking for something to spice up your look, or just something different, faux locs might be the way to go. Get on with the trend and don’t forget to take selfies!
