There's a New Chairman in Town

Tom Ford is officially seceding Diane von Furstenberg as the new CFDA Chairman. At a CFDA board meeting on Tuesday, March 19, notable industry members voted on the acclaimed designer to take on the role. Ford is replacing von Furstenberg who reined as president and chairwoman for nearly 12 years. This changing of the guards, per say, is bound to bring a fresh new direction to American fashion.

But before we get into the potential changes predicted once Ford starts his role on June 1, let’s break down the basics. Who is Tom Ford, what is the CFDA, and why does this even matter?

Tom Ford

The veteran designer is well known for his cool girl disco-vibe clothing. He started making waves in the ‘90s as the creative director for Gucci. Revamping the brand, Ford brought life to a new era for Gucci through 2004. He became the head designer for Yves Saint Laurent during this time. In 2005, he created his own self-named label and it took off.

From collaborations with devoted performers and athletes to contributions in film, Ford has transcended into all industries. The connections and relationships he’s formed has multiplied his experiences. Ford has been a CFDA member since 2000 and has been awarded multiple CFDA awards; he is therefore already assimilated into the council.

CFDA

So, what is the CFDA and its purpose? The CFDA is an association with a council of over 500 industry members who work in the trade-specific fields of womenswear, jewelry, etc. According to CFDA’s mission statement, its members aim to move American fashion to the forefront of global fashion.

While the name may not be familiar to everyone, it is associated with and runs many well know fashion events and programs. For example, the association’s committee helps run New York Fashion Week and maintains the official Fashion Calendar year-round.

The fashion industry has room for improvement, especially in the realms of inclusivity and New York Fashion Week. Ford will most likely be faced with reinventing their standards.

"Ford is an excellent choice given his stature both in the American fashion industry and on the international stage," said Aria Darcella, The Daily Front Row Fashion News Editor.

WWD interviewed CFDA members and found that many are excited for a change within the association and industry. Those including Rebecca Minkoff, Norma Kamali, and Robert Geller shared hopes of inclusivity through female treatment, smaller brand awareness, and the reinvention of Fashion Week in the form of a unified network of designers, and a prominent Men’s Week presence.

von Furstenberg is stepping down as chairwoman on her own terms and is leaving in high spirits She told the CFDA that she is excited to welcome and support Ford.
