Oscars 2020: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Remember that little jingle associated with a blue bin in the corner of your 7th grade classroom? Over the last decade, there has been a shift in consciousness about the excess waste we create. For this year's Oscars, a handful of celebrities made it a point to communicate eco-friendliness through what they wore on the red carpet. Serving vintage, repurposed, and sustainable, take a look at these 10 celebrities who made their green mark.

Penelope Cruz is strutting a reworked vintage Chanel gown which was first seen during their French SS95 Couture show. The dress had an added halter top, delicate white flower, and a pearl belt. This black and white contrast is timeless.

Think long sleeves, then think longer. Margot Robbie floats the red carpet in a Spring 1994 Couture Chanel dress. This deep navy chiffon mimics ripples of the sea featuring a decorative blue stone brooch.

Known recently for reworking vintage pieces, Kim Kardashian stepped into the Oscar’s after party wearing a nude floor long dress from Alexander McQueen's spring/summer 2003 collection. This deliberately destroyed look also serves as an art piece, making a bold statement.

Vanessa Nadal alongside her husband Lin-Manuel Miranda, wore a beautiful white vintage gown designed by Alexander McQueen. It features jeweled accents alluding to shoulder pads accompanied by accessories that draw your eye in.

Joanne Tucker, accompanied with her husband Adam Driver, made an appearance wearing a vintage Oscar de la Renta gown. This dress features a fitted black top with a cream skirt wrapped delicately with a floral design.

Timothée Chalamet sported a navy Prada suit. Simplistic yet futuristic, this non-traditional suit features a zipper with accent pockets. Not to mention all the material used was recycled, and the dazzling vintage brooch serves a gleaming touch too.

Kaitlyn Dever made a bold red appearance in this Louis Vuitton dress. With a purple beaded overlay, this gown is no less than unique. Thinking why this dress made the cut? The silk used to make this look was green certified by the Red Carpet.

Who says you can’t wear a dress to multiple events? Olivia Colman proved this point by rewearing the same dress she wore to the BAFTAs just a week prior. This gown designed by Stella McCartney was made with sustainable blue velvet and features a unique shoulder cut out.

Léa Seydoux wore a white trumpet style floor-length gown featuring a black border highlighting the bottom. This look was designed by Louis Vuitton and constructed from organic wood-based silk.

Here is Jaoquin Pheonix who wore a sleek black suit accompanied with a bowtie. Designed by Stella McCartney who is known for sustainable fashion, Jaoquin has worn this same suit to all of the award shows this year, making a green statement indeed.

It’s great seeing celebrities use their platform to make an important statement. We can all help, whether it’s buying vintage or buying from a sustainable brand. Think about how you can make your green mark, too.
