The Trends To Watch For From Copenhagen Fashion Week
Over the past few years, Copenhagen Fashion Week has gone from being a fashion insider's secret to being globally influential. They kick off fashion month and set the biggest trends on and off the runway before the other fashion capitals even debut their collections. If 2019 was any indication, it’s that the lesser known fashion capital knows how to bring it, and by it—we mean style. The trends we saw in Denmark quickly blew up on Instagram and stuck around for a while. Danes have been the first to embrace unique colorways, chunky sneakers, and mixed prints and patterns. It’s not just the Danish city’s street-style that has sky-rocketed them to the top of the fashion world as we know it, but their cult-labels like Saks Potts, Cecilie Bahnsen, Ganni, and Malene Birger are all taking over luxury retailers like Net-A-Porter and Farfetch—even Nordstrom is adding the brands to their front pages. You can probably guess that the F/W 2020 runways were nothing less than what we expected. Here are six trends we’re stealing from the runways, from playful scarf styling to extravagant quilting.
The Brighter The Better
Long gone are the days of neutrals and muted tones for Fall. Color palettes on the runway are getting more unexpected, so it’s time to get out of your all-black comfort zone. It may seem intimidating, but it works, trust us.
2. Check Mate
This isn’t your average picnic table print. Checkerboard seems to the dominating print this season, and we’re not mad about it. It stands out just enough to make a statement, but isn’t overpowering with multiple colorways.
3. Not Your Grandmother’s Quilt
Quilting in outerwear was seen in F/W ’19 and has only gotten more prominent. It’s comfy, practical, and adds a unique design element to the puffer material many of us have become bored of.
4. Leather Weather
Leather may be a classic material, but designers this past week took it to a newer level. Leather was a big feature over at Ganni, with the material made into the likes of knee length skirts, cocktail dresses. It was a perfect way to bring in a more grunge aesthetic to the brand known for its balloon sleeves and printed dresses.
5. One Scarf, Multiple Ways
Did you really think the only way to wear a scarf was around your neck? Knit and silk scarves can add a different element to your look by being tied around your shoulder, or even as a belt.
6. I Like My Knits Thick
Copenhagen’s knitwear game was strong this season, and every item is what you’d want to wear to go into hibernation. Whether it was vests layered onto dresses or dress-length turtlenecks, it’s time to rethink the good ol’ sweater-and-jean combo.
