Dressing Up Like Your Favorite Halloween Cult Classic
A really good movie can bring us more than just good vibes whenever we watch them. Films can influence the way we look, the music we listen to, and of course, how we choose to accessorize. Cult classic Halloween movies, in particular, can really spark a bloody good level of inspiration when helping us come up with new and exciting ways to further add to our looks. Here is my guide on how to create the perfect outfit based on your personal favorite cult classic Halloween film.
Halloween (1978)
Jamie Lee Curtis stunned as Laurie Strode in this slasher film we all know and love. These 70s’ outfits were giving us everything—before all of the blood, of course. If the movie Halloween taught me anything besides how not to die in 3 minutes, it’s that minimal accessories are sometimes necessary. Keep it big with a classic blowout, and always have a cute cross-body bag for your school books, or your 10-inch kitchen knife.
EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)
I watch this movie all year round, but this time of year is the best time to watch this Tim Burton masterpiece. Edward showed us a thing or two on how to really rock suspenders and silver hardware, and Kim and Peg’s mostly pastel wardrobe gave us a look into 60s’ inspired suburban fashion.
The Lost Boys (1987)
A good, old fashion flick about vampires is what really gets me through life, and The Lost Boys is no exception. First of all, the soundtrack is amazing, so naturally, the outfits follow suit. This 80’s classic taught us that earrings on men are equally as important to a look as they are on women, and gypsy-esque bangles and scarfs are the perfect touch to any spaghetti strap blouse and sparkled skirt combo.
Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Now this movie may have been the best film of 2009, and even though I was only 7 when it came out, I knew it was going to be a cult classic. Jennifer’s devilish looks gave us some key tips on accessorizing for any occasion. If you're going to see a hot new band, you don’t want to just wear a plain old mini skirt; put on hot pinkish red pantyhose underneath, and some optional blood. Wear arm sleeves more often, add cute little key-chains to a pair of bottoms, and wear heart-shaped hoops instead of traditional circle ones.
THE CRAFT (1996)
I am sure we can all agree that The Craft gave us all the goth schoolgirl vibes that we never knew we needed. Black rosaries and complimentary cross-dangle earrings are the perfect way to play up a classic all-black outfit. Don’t forget a bold eyeliner and plum lip combo to finish off any spell-bounding look.
Beetlejuice (1988)
If you say his name 3 times, he’ll help you get rid of whatever is in your house - for a price of course, but Beetlejuice also taught us how to rock a mean pinstripe pattern! Lydia Deetz sure showed us that hair can be the biggest accessory, and you can truly never wear too much black!
HOCUS POCUS (1993)
Everyone’s favorite Halloween film, Hocus Pocus, gives us the joy of the spooky season every time we watch it. If I learned anything fashion wise about this movie, it’s that corsets were fashionable and functional in the 1600’s and they still are now! Always go for minimal accessories when being chased by zombies and longer nails can be just as cute!
Queen of The damned (2002)
Like I said before, vampire movies hit so hard, especially because of the fashion. Queen of The Damned gave me all of the 2000’s punk rock inspiration from fishnet tops to really big cross necklaces. Watching this movie made me so much more invested in adding darkness to my style. It taught me that obnoxious jewelry and family heirlooms can be super stylish; and that space buns can look bomb with any outfit.
THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975)
Let’s do the time-warp again, and talk about these dramatically fabulous outfits from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. First of all, Dr. Frank-N-Furter had no business being that stylish! Chunky pearl necklaces, glittery arm sleeves, and of course, the fishnet pantyhose! I mean what could he not have looked amazing in! If I learned anything from the fashion in this film, it’s to never be afraid of showing off and being yourself…and you can never have too much eye shadow!
THE ADDAMS FAMILY & THE ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES
They might be creepy and kooky, but they sure know how to create a signature look. The Addams’ Family proved that love prevails no matter how dark your aesthetic may be. Gomez’s iconic bow tie and dress suit combo alongside Morticia’s dramatic sleeved dress; Wednesday’s white collared dress, and Pugsley’s striped shirt and short ensemble taught us that it is always nice to look sharp, with minimal accessories. Oh yes and Debbie, she sure knew how to give off that “angelic” feeling with her pastel color palette!
SCREAM (1996)
What’s your favorite scary movie? Well, if it’s Scream then you probably already know some of the memorable lines and outfits. Now for the main character, Sidney, was not the most stylish out of the “killer” bunch, but she definitely taught me one thing; comfort is key, especially when dealing with a masked serial killer. The other characters had their moments, like Tatum’s signature “I wanna be in the sequel” yellow shirt and skirt combo, and Stu proving that a silver chain and watch can go with every outfit.
DEATH BECOMES HER (1992)
A magical potion that keeps me young forever like Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn? Sign me up! Death Becomes Her is definitely one of my favorite movies to watch around this time of year. For accessories, keep it extra with statement diamond dangle earrings and a super sleek blowout. Don’t forget to match your makeup to your outfit and of course self-care to make sure that potion doesn’t backfire!
There are so many more cult classic Halloween films that you can draw inspiration from when trying to build and accessorize an outfit. I hope this guide gave you the impulse you needed to turn on one of these movies and take some detailed style notes, while enjoying a cup of whatever tickles your fancy, whether that be tea or blood.
