Afghan Coats: How to Style the Trendiest Coat of the Season

It’s November, and many of you may already be sifting through your closets, trying to decide whether or not you need some new coats to keep you warm this winter. If you are like me and you enjoy keeping things fresh, but you also have an uncontrollable shopping addiction, you might be asking yourself what you can add to your closet that you do not already have. Afghan or fur-trimmed coats have become super trendy on Pinterest & TikTok for this season, and there is no doubt that this is the perfect coat to complete your winter wardrobe.

A BRIEF HISTORY ON THE AFGHAN COAT

Afghan coats were invented by the Afghans around the 1920s to keep them warmer during the colder winter months. They were then brought to the United Kingdom in the 60s’ and became a vital part of the ‘hippie’ fashion scene. Celebrities like George Harrison, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and David Bowie all wore an Afghan coat at some point in their careers, proving they were (and still are) a coat worth owning. The coat was also popularized again in the early 2000s’ by the influence of Kate Hudson’s character Penny Lane in the film Almost Famous.

HOW YOU CAN STYLE THE AFGHAN COAT

These have, quite literally, become my favorite jacket to see anyone wear no matter the color scheme or length! With added influence of both 70s’ and Y2K style, the coat is easy to play into anyone’s aesthetic.

One thing I really love about these fur-trimmed coats is that they can act as the statement piece to an outfit that may or may not be a tad bit boring. You can be wearing your pajamas just to go on a quick Starbucks run then throw one of these coats over top and you will automatically look like you tried. These coats are super cool to thrift since many coats/jackets at the thrift store are vintage, but you can also get your hands on one from Urban Outfitters, Nasty Gal, ASOS, H&M, or Dolls Kill.

Afghan coats are so fun and playful that it is almost impossible to not look good in one. But still, if you are on the fence about how to style these coats, that’s totally understandable. The easiest way to dive into any new piece is to start off simple; make the coat the one item in the outfit that you want to stand out.

If you're trying to style an all-black fur-trimmed coat, pick one other solid color that will be worn under, your favorite pair of jeans, and a black platform boot to up-the-ante, and your height! Of course, accessories make it all come together and add something to the look, so if you think the outfit is still too simple, even with the fluffy-fur element of the coat, stack em’ up. But if you’d rather be minimal, the outfit itself is stylish with no accessories as well.

This coat is trending for many reasons this fall and winter, but the best part is that it's a piece that will stay in your closet for a while. Afghan coats are without question a crucial item that will help you elevate your style time after time.
