A Fashion Student's Guide on What to Ask for This Christmas
We are already a week into December and most of us are shopping for Christmas gifts for all of our friends and family. Some of us are so focused on what we are getting for others, that we have yet to even make our own Christmas lists. No need to worry, there is still plenty of time to think about what you might want to ask for this year, or even treat yourself to.
If you are into all things fashion and beauty, but you just do not know what you really want, or might even need for yourself, all you need is a little fashion insight to help you put your wishlists together. So without further ado, I give you a fashion student’s (detailed) guide on what you should ask for this Christmas—from accessories to clothing and even room decor!
Accessories
Leg Warmers + ARM WARMERS
Arm and leg warmers have undoubtedly become the must-have accessories for this year’s winter season. So of course, these accessories would be at the top of my list of what you should ask for. If you do not own a pair, or you simply think you might need some more to add to your collection, these are the perfect gifts to ask for.
WIRED HEADPHONES
Wired headphones are the most recent TikTok-fashion obsession as we are in Y2K accessories era. They are so cool to use as an accessory, or even as actual headphones! Many of us have newer phones, so the regular adapters might not work, but there are some adapters that you can attach to your headphones so that they can fit into your phone’s headphone/charger port. This would be a super cool and unique gift to ask for this year, and there are also inexpensive options as low as $10 on Amazon!
Pointed-toe knee-high Boots
Shoes are perhaps one of my favorite things to ask for any gift. Pointed-toe-knee-highs would be such a great gift to ask for, since they are a staple to have in your wardrobe. Black is more traditional, but I know many of us fashion-lovers have tons of black in our closets. These are super easy to thrift as well, which is perfect for those who love to shop secondhand for Christmas gifts.
Earmuffs
If you have been on Pinterest and TikTok this season, you know earmuffs have been all the rage! These are the perfect accessory to achieve a snow-girl aesthetic while keeping you warm in the process. Earmuffs are such a simple yet essential gift to ask for since you will get to use them for the whole winter season!
CyBER-Y2K Sunglasses
These might not fit everyone’s style/aesthetic, but they are so cool. Sunglasses are the ultimate baddie accessory, and having different flavors, can help elevate your style! Cyber-Y2K-inspired sunglasses can be found anywhere—even your nearest gas station.
Vivienne Westwood + Chrome hearts jewelry
We have all been hip to the Vivienne Westwood pearl necklace trend, but the designer has so many other designs that are just as amazing. This is obviously not in everyone’s price range, but you can find more affordable pieces secondhand on apps like Depop and eBay and dupes on Amazon. Chrome Hearts is a brand whose pieces are almost impossible to get your hands on, so asking for a cute cross necklace or ring would do the trick.
Clothing
Jaded London Pieces
The Jaded London brand made waves in the summer with their bright and 70s’ inspired clothing and accessories. This season, they have come out with several new pieces and collections that are absolutely gorgeous. While the pieces might not get to you in time for Christmas, they are still worth asking for.
All Things Vintage (Tops, Bottoms, ETc)
Ok, hear me out. Christmas is the season of giving, so why not give a fashion-obsessed individual something that says “taste.” I would definitely be asking for a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier shirt if anyone I knew could possibly get their hands on one. But since I am the vintage curator in the family, I will have to gift myself a vintage piece this year. While this is probably one of the more unrealistic options on this list, a vintage piece of clothing is still worth asking for, am I right?
Netted Sweaters
Sweaters are the one thing everybody gets for Christmas. So why not ask for some cool ones to replace your generic basic cable-knits and turtlenecks this time around. Loose knit and fish-netted sweaters are super cute to layer with, and can again be found at your nearest thrift store. Brands like Tripp NYC and Racer Worldwide have some really unique designs to look out for.
Puffer Jackets & Afghan coats
An obvious winter essential, coats & jackets are perfect to ask for this Christmas. Puffer jackets in particular are an absolute must-have in your wardrobe if you do not have one already. They can be found anywhere from H&M to Urban Outfitters. Afghan coats are the trendiest coats this season, so asking for one of these will surely make your holiday season a little bit merrier.
Sandblasted/ DIRTY WASHED DENIM
Lately, I have been obsessed with sandblasted/dirty-looking denim and have been looking everywhere for the perfect pair. This denim wash reminds me so much of the early 2000s, and with the era’s popularity among many brands, such as I.AM.GIA, they should not be that difficult to find.
Beauty
DESIGNER PERFUMES
Perfumes/fragrances are such an easy and great gift to ask for because you can never have too many—especially if they're designer. I have my eye on a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance to add to my collection, mostly because of the cute bottles. Asking for a designer perfume this year will not only have you smelling great, but it will give you a really cute piece of decor once it’s finished.
LIp GLOSS + LIP CARE SETS
Everyone loves a great lip gloss/ lip scrub. You can never have enough in your collection, so why not ask for more this Christmas? They are an everyday beauty product that can easily be taken anywhere, just in case you need a little glossing. Even wearing my mask I still have to apply a least a little bit before continuing my day.
SKINCARE SETS
Skincare is the all-around best gift to ask for if you’re not sure what you really want! Now, you may already have a go-to face wash or moisturizer, so asking for more of that would be perfect, but if you're not really all that into skincare, trying out a few different products can definitely help you find the one.
ROOM DECOR/Tech
A DIGITAL CAMERA/ CAMCORDER
Instagram photos can get just a little bit more interesting if you ask for a digital camera or a camcorder this Christmas. Whether you're actually using them to take pictures with or just using them as more of an accessory, they are super cool and fun to play around and make memories with.
A NEW DESK FOR YOUR ROOM/DORM/OFFICE
This one’s for my school girls out there, who like me, may be sick of doing homework on their couch or bed. Asking for a desk this Christmas will for sure get you motivated to decorate your workspace or bedroom and give you an extra place to put your laptop, coffee, and maybe even a nice plant.
COFFEE TABLE BOOKS
Whether you actually own a coffee table or not, fashion, style, and art-related books are great gifts to ask for. Books, in general, would be a nice gift to ask for, but if you like looking at the books just as much as you might enjoy reading them, coffee table books like Fashion: The Definitive Visual Guide are perfect to ask for.
Y2k Inspired phones (For use or decorative Purposes)
Last but not least, Y2K phones are one gift that might be a bit odd for some, but I think if you love the Y2K style you would enjoy one of these to use as an actual phone, or simply act as a cute decorative piece on your desk or nightstands.
I hope you all find this gift guide useful if you still do not know what to ask for, or what to give that fashion-obsessed person in your life. These are some of my personal wants this Christmas, so if you are not into some of these ideas, you can definitely still take inspiration from the list, and make your own depending on your style.
