Hurt and Healing: Eva Westphal Speaks on Her New Singles
Eva Westphal, the acoustic pop-singer-songwriter is an enigma of inspiration for young people. As a 20-year-old college student, she has built her music career from a couple of Spotify singles and homemade music videos to having over 5k monthly listeners, a discography of 8 singles, and a significant following on Instagram and Tik Tok.
In her music, she sheds light on some of the darker struggles in a young person’s life like body image and toxic relationships. With the release of her two new singles on March 1st, 2021, we had to chat with her about her career and the meaning behind the songs, “Morning Shower” and “Dear Anna”.
As a twenty-year-old girl growing up in the age of Instagram filters and fake smiles, like many of us young women, mental health and body positivity became important topics in Eva’s life. These conversations are reflected in the lyrics of her two newest singles: “Morning Shower” and “Dear Anna”.
Eva shared with us her journey as a musician and what motivated her to write these two songs:
Q: What lead you to become a musician?
Eva: “I’ve been playing violin since I was six years old and singing classically since I was ten, but I always wanted to write songs. When I was thirteen, I got my first guitar as a gift and never stopped writing!”
Q: I love how you center a lot of your content around body positivity. Has body image impacted your music and the songs your write?
Eva: “Yes, recovery as a whole is a centerpiece for a lot of my music and the way I see the world. I am in recovery from an eating disorder and my progress and current health and happiness are at the center of almost everything I do. I am so grateful for the place I am in and for my ability to influence others and hopefully create a positive impact—both on and offline!”
Q: What do these two new singles, “Morning Shower” and “Dear Anna”, mean to you?
Eva: “Morning Shower” was written about somebody who hurt me, and who I tried for years to let go of; they had a grip on me, and writing these two songs was incredibly eye-opening and it really let me move on from them. Writing these songs was almost a therapeutic experience; I could feel myself healing. “Morning Shower” is kind of a “before”—how it felt to be in the thick of it—and “Dear Anna” is my writing a letter to that person, realizing that we are separate people and that they don’t have any real power over me anymore, and finally letting them go.
