Decor Ideas to Funk Up Your Living Space
Ever find yourself looking around your apartment or bedroom, feeling excruciatingly bored with your decor of choice? If you read that question and answered “yes”, then you're probably in need of a room/apartment makeover. Now I know what you're thinking. You have redone your place and rearranged your furniture a thousand times, and it still looks dull. So maybe you need some new things. Some “groovy” things if you will.
If you have been on Pinterest, Instagram, or TikTok lately, you know the 60s and 70s decor has been trending on a whole new level. Funky rugs, squiggly mirrors, colorful vases, and so much more. But like most trends, I am sure a lot of you are hesitant when it comes to trying something out that is a little more than “simplistic”, especially when it comes to a living space. So here are a couple of decor ideas to achieve that 60s and 70s feel without going completely retro!
Blob Mirrors
Blob Mirrors have been one of the biggest DIY’s of the year thus far. They are all over TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and of course, Pinterest. They are colorful, playful, and inspired by the decor trends of the 60’s and 70’s. These would go perfectly in a bedroom or any room in your living space where a little bit of color and “funk” is needed. Here’s a TikTok tutorial on how to make one yourself:
Psychedelic Rugs
While I am not the biggest fan of rugs, I can definitely see myself buying into this trend in the near future. These are not the average, simplistic rugs we are used to seeing in our Pinterest feeds. They are much more reminiscent of the 70’s patterns we all know, and some love. The rugs can be placed anywhere from your dining room, to your bathroom, and will instantly give your space a touch of the 70s.
Lava Lamps
Lava lamps were the hottest thing on the market when they were first released in 1963. They fell off for a while and regained popularity in the 90s and the early 2000s. This is an easy way to give your living space a groovy look without changing any furniture or color schemes. You can add the lava lamp to a nightstand, an entertainment center, a desk, and if you are really into them, you can get the 27’ lava lamps that can be placed at an entryway, or even as the main light source in your living room!
Togo Couches
These togo couches are probably the first thing that come to mind when I think of retro style furniture. I love that they come in all colors to match any aesthetic, and can be played around with in terms of size and even material. You can add some psychedelic couch pillows to up the 60s’ and 70s’ influence, or leave the couch as is and add some cool decor around it!
Beaded Curtains
Beaded curtains are such a cute way to bring a 70s feel into your home without going overboard. These were popular again in the 90s and some of the 2000s’. Beaded curtains can add more of a bohemian touch to any doorway. They come in many different styles and like wood, plastic, string, and macrame.
Funky Tables
One of the best things to experiment with when choosing new decor is patterns. With the popular 60s and 70s psychedelic patterns coming back into style, they are being used on everything from pants and shirts, to coffee tables. These funky tables from La Manso are so 70s’ -it’s almost too much to handle. While these tables are a big step away from their popular bubble rings, they are definitely the same in terms of price being far from cheap. They are at a whopping $1059.17 per table. So while these particular funky tables might not be for everyone, there are other table options out there that can help you achieve that retro 70s’ inspired look.
If you really love the decor from the 60s’ and 70s’ but do not want to let go of your fav modern pieces, try and experiment with some of these cool trends, and cure that funky fever!
