Devon Lee Carlson Goes Designer
For years now, influencers have been taking various markets by storm, earning themselves household names. Instagram and Youtube influencers often go through fads where their popularity only lasts a short time. However, some of the most successful influencers go unrecognized by the general public.
Devon Lee Carlson is one of those influencers. You may have heard of her boyfriend and lead singer of The Neighbourhood, Jesse Rutherford, or her sister, Sydney Carlson, who has close relationships with celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Olivia O’Brien. Devon’s success in various industries is underrated. For example, have you heard of Wildflower Cases? I’m sure you’ve seen those adorable iPhone cases all over your Instagram feed or stores like Urban Outfitters. But, did you know she is the co-owner of the brand? Carlson created the company when she was only seventeen with her younger sister. However, her success doesn’t stop there.
Devon Lee Carlson is twenty-six years old with an estimated net worth of one to five million dollars. She has 237K YouTube subscribers and 1.3M Instagram followers. At such a young age, Devon began her own phone case business and collaborated with luxury brands like Marc Jacobs.
Carlson was born in southern California which is where she lives currently. Growing up in a world where social media was just becoming commodified, Devon was able to adjust to these new platforms quickly and began her journey to success. With the help of her mother, Michelle Carlson, Devon and her sister Sydney started their phone case company.
After the launch of Wildflower in 2013, Carlson began content creating on Youtube. To this day she continues to post clothing hauls, “Day in the Life” videos, and travel vlogs. Devon grew up during the rise of social media and was able to learn the in’s and out’s in order to grow her popularity.
Devon has several attributes to her underrated success. She started out vlogging on YouTube, created a multi-million dollar phone case company, and now, she’s going designer. Recently, the influencer has created a line with Marc Jacobs. Over the years, Marc Jacobs has adjusted to the state of fashion including modern slants on classic designs. I feel that this collaboration was a match made in heaven. This collection features a slip dress, charm purses, an oversized tee, a baby tee, sweat shorts, and a sweat set. Not only was this collaboration a great way for Marc Jacobs to appeal to a younger generation, but it is also a great opportunity for Devon to further establish her brand.
Of course, she is a co-owner of Wildflower Cases with her sister Sydney, but this collaboration with Marc Jacobs is all her own. As I mentioned earlier, Marc Jacobs is able to understand the trend climate which includes geometric patterns, vibrant color pallets, and “Y2K” silhouettes. This shift is evident through the “Heaven” by Marc Jacobs collection.
Devon’s collection is nonetheless as funky and youthful as Heaven was. Paper Magazine states that “Devon Lee Carlson’s First Marc Jacobs Line is Peak Nostalgia.” The line is said to be inspired by some of Devon’s favorite celebrities like Alexa Demie. The pieces in this collection are equally as nostalgic for Carlson as it was for us. A graphic of her dog is displayed on the sweat set and let me tell you, it is just adorable.
The rest of the collection feels like a tribute to the Y2K era which was championed by it-girls, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The baby tee and shorts were iconic throughout this era. Devon put a twist on this silhouette by adding pops of pink and orange with fun patterns in order to add her personality to the collection. The Y2K goodness doesn’t just stop there, the charms purse, and ruffled slip dress was a staple in the early 2000s.
Though this collection may be inspired by iconic women and fashion eras, I feel that it remains true to who Devon is. While skimming through the collection you can see her vision. Devon Lee Carlson and Marc Jacobs is a match made in heaven. Seeing this collection come to life, I can tell that things can only go up from here for Devon. Her designer days are not over, they’ve only just begun.
