Euphoria Season 2: The Makeup Shift

Season two of Euphoria premiered on HBO on January 9th and many fans and makeup lovers were surprised to see this season’s makeup looks a bit different than usual. I’m here to fill you in on everything you need to know about Euphoria’s makeup shift this season.

The mastermind behind all of the show’s incredibly creative looks is makeup artist Donni Davy. “It’s not a repeat of season one,” but instead “more redefined and more subtle,” she mentioned on her Instagram. Davy also described to US Weekly that this season the looks are more “discoverable” as opposed to “impossible to miss.” Sam Levinson, the creator and director of the show, told Davy he wanted a more natural look with “no foundation” and “dewy skin,” an overall more minimal look. These new looks were achieved using illuminating liquid skin products and spot concealing where needed.

The eye looks on the left are a glimpse into what the audience can expect from this season of Euphoria. Davy explains in an Instagram post, “Season two is like season one’s more introverted sister.” Compared to the photo on the right, season two will focus on more minimal makeup and less coverage. While in the previous season, viewers saw chunky glitter, bold liner, and intense color. The palette used throughout season one is the Spacecase Pro Palette, which retails at $198.

“She has her full glam moments but then switches to super minimalism. She loves her dewy skin and going foundation-free. She experiments with all different takes on winged liner from classic to modern to… something more free-form. She loves bright colors, but only when she’s really feeling bold. She’s elusive with her sparkle and prefers a softer version of twinkling Euphoria glam,” Davy states in reference to the looks in season two.

Let’s take a look at some of the character’s looks from the season two premiere.

Cassie’s Look

These changes to the makeup looks will play a huge role in storytelling and character development. From the season two premiere of Euphoria, the audience can see a shift in Cassie’s look. The tiny rhinestones were meticulously used to create an innocent twinkle in Cassie’s anxiety-filled eyes. This makeup choice was meant to leave the audience questioning if she really regrets hooking up with Nate in the bathroom.

Davy told US Weekly, “She’s a really big part of the storyline this season and goes through a lot of intense relationship-related events where she’s very much still sort of in this mind frame from season one where she’s appealing to men I thought she was gonna shift from like using makeup as a way to make her the most conventionally attractive kind of version of herself. But she uses makeup to kind of like trying on these like different, very feminine versions of herself.”

Maddy’s NYE Glam

Maddy’s look is a direct contrast to Cassie’s. Maddy’s character is known for her full coverage and intense glam. Davy created a beautiful New Years’ Eve look with a bold silver cut crease and dark black winged liner. She continues to serve bold makeup looks to match her confident personality. Changing the nuance of Maddy with her makeup wouldn't fit her storyline in the same ways it would benefit Cassie’s character.

Jules’ Graphic Liner

Jules’ New Years Eve makeup look incapsulates the new direction of makeup Davy was going for, the minimalist, “if you blink, you’ll miss it” look. Throughout the episode, Jules’ makeup wasn’t very visible. At first glance, the viewer may think she wasn’t wearing makeup at all. But in the fire pit scene where Jules locks eyes with Rue, the audience can see the black graphic liner and subtle amount of glitter on her eyelid through the dim fire light.

As many of us know, “Euphoria makeup” was a huge trend in 2020. Creators and influencers were recreating looks all over Tiktok and Youtube. Many fans became invested in the character’s makeup and what looks were next to come. With this new makeup approach, I wonder if this trend will still continue to swarm the internet.

Euphoria is back and I must say, not only am I eager to see the plot unfold, but also how the new makeup will parallel with it. Will Davy’s minimalistic makeup approach mean less drama? More than likely, no. However, I’m sure we can still expect some amazing looks this season.
