Hair Ribbon: A Dreamy Trend to be Tied Into This Season

Simone Rocha, Cecilie Bahnsen, Sandy Liang, Miu Miu; all these designers anticipated the trend of hair ribbons in the fall/winter runway season far before the season began. Whether the ribbons appear sewn in delicate tulle or woven through long braids, these designers knew ribbons and bows were going to rebloom in one way or another.

From niche creators on TikTok to larger creators on Instagram who are in creative partnerships with designers like the ones previously mentioned, everyone took notes and followed the ribbon trend this year. Starting simple with the classic double-braid ribbon, then branching out to more imaginative approaches.

When a trend makes its way from the runway to all social media platforms, that’s when we know it has flourished, and we get to see how everyone interprets the trend to fit into their own personal style.

Here are a few more ideas on styling ribbon and bows to tie the trend into your hair and closet.

Try a new texture

Experiment with different textures of ribbon in your hair- from tulle to silk to velvet, the material changes your entire look and can either make it more dramatic or delicate. Brands like Simone Rocha or Rodarte bring bows to the runway in the most glamorous form. Of course, you can start small with a simple piece of silk ribbon to tie into double braids, then branch out more into the drama, cutting longer pieces of ribbon and picking out new pieces of fabric to play with.

Untied and understated

Your style might be more understated, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on this trend. One simple knot as the daintiest accessory makes for a beautiful, just as chic look. You can simply tailor it to your personal style.

The more the merrier

The ribbons and bows don’t need to stop at your hair. If your style is the opposite of understated, add more ribbon than you usually would, not only to your hair but to your clothing as well. If designers can do it on the runway, why shouldn’t you?

Designers created intricate looks this season from the multiple hair bows in every model to sewn in bows on tulle dresses. It’s meant to inspire, and this small accessory is the perfect opportunity to directly bring the looks you admire from afar to life.

Around the neck

Not only have ribbons made a comeback on the runway and in the media, but chokers have slowly made an appearance as well. Whether it’s the longing for 2014 fashion to be back or looking for an inventive way to layer necklaces, tying any ribbon of your choice around your neck is the easiest way to accessorize. Layer with other necklaces or leave the ribbon as is!

On the feet

Ballet footwear, both flats and platforms, have been trending for the past couple of seasons. They are a perfect way to incorporate ribbon into your style! If you can get your hands on a ballet shoe with ribbon ankle straps, this one requires no DIY.

Woven through for the winter

Autumn is in full swing and so is layering. Little bows on tights or knee-high socks for the cold days are the perfect way to bring this trend to your wardrobe in a way that still feels special. This style can be bought already with bows sewed in or DIYed using regular tights and ribbon. This time of year is the perfect time to further accessorize tights or socks in a unique way like this.

In the last few seasons of fashion, ribbon was hard to miss. From runways to the street, ribbons and bows are decorating hair and dresses. Now that it’s a fully established accessory, I hope you’re leaving this article inspired with new ways to style ribbon with your personal wardrobe.
