The 'Cold Girl’ Makeup Trend: Are Makeup Trends Becoming Repetitive?
The TikTok ‘For You’ page is where many makeup lovers find new techniques and trends to try out, and possibly add to their makeup routine. A new trend that has begun to surface as we trek through winter is the ‘Cold Girl’ makeup look. However, with a new makeup trend taking over TikTok each week, it can start to become a bit repetitive.
The ‘Cold Girl’ makeup look is intended to create the appearance of chilly, frost-bitten skin. The goal is to seem flushed, which is achieved with bright pink blush, while adding a bit of sparkle with a shimmery, silver highlighter.
Does this sound familiar to you? You’re probably thinking of the other TikTok phenomenon, the ‘Clean Girl Aesthetic.’ This is another trend that created a huge buzz on the app and beauty lovers and influencers alike made it their inspiration for their ‘everyday makeup’ look.
Repetitive Makeup Trends
Social media perpetuates new trends so quickly that it is difficult not to recycle the previously most popular ones. As a result of this, many of them become repetitive; more specifically, makeup trends.
The beauty industry has seen it all and it is hard to produce new concepts that consumers have not bought into before. In turn, trends are being coined and renamed to appear as something groundbreaking.
Many of these trends stem from the “no makeup, makeup” look. The goal is to wear lots of makeup, but make it seem as though you aren’t. The ‘clean girl aesthetic’ and ‘cold girl makeup’ both use the same techniques of minimal foundation, glowy, highlighted skin, and heavy blush.
recycled beauty trends
These recycled trends can only resurface so many times until they become a fad and a drastic new form of makeup application gains traction.
Trend cycling is nothing new within the fashion and beauty world. Minimalism is in, but when applying that to the makeup industry it appears redundant which can often be seen as uninspired and boring.
In previous years, dating back to 2016-2019, full glam makeup looks were at large with colorful and bold faces. Famous beauty influencers at the time, such as James Charles, gained their following by creating daring, cut-crease eyeshadow looks.
With the industry’s cyclical nature, it is likely we will see a resurgence of this trend somewhere in the near future. However, due to the takeover of minimal makeup looks and microtrends, we are uncertain when that will be.
