Project Runway Dresses The Winter Olympics
As the Olympics proceed, the competition is becoming more intense. And who better to comment and analyze the figure skating competitions than Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir? Both are previous Olympians and are well known within the skating community.
Tara Lipinski competed at the 1998 Winter Olympics, winning gold at age 15. She became the youngest winner in an individual event in the history of the Winter Games.
Johnny Weir competed at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games, however, he never won any medals. Despite this, he was admitted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2020. He has also been known for his dazzling style and wild taste–on the ice and the red carpet.
Both Lipinski and Weir have been inseparable ever since they both retired from competitions in 2014. Now, for the Beijing Games, they are NBC’s official commentators and will be reporting from Stamford, Connecticut.
In November of 2021, Lipinski and Weir were guests on season 19 episode 5 of Project Runway. The contestants were tasked with a team challenge of designing a pair of looks that the two could wear while commentating on figure skating during the Games.
While many of the looks took on inspiration from figure skating costumes, one pair caught the eyes of Lipinski and Weir. The winner of the challenge were designers, Bones Jones, and Anna Yinan Zhou.
The duo claimed that as soon as these looks came down the runway; they knew that these were the winning looks that fit their personalities best.
As the Olympics drew closer, the pair revealed that some alterations had to be made to the looks before they could be worn. For Johnny’s look, Bone’s pants had to be replaced because they did not fit Johnny’s athletic body. While Tara claimed that she would only be taking in the dress and not be making any other changes to Anna’s designs.
Now that the Olympics are underway, we have yet to see the Project Runway designs worn by them. However, through both Lipinski's and Weir's Instagrams, we have seen a handful of their gorgeous looks from the first couple days of the figure skating competitions.
While waiting patiently to see Bones’ and Anna’s designs, check out Olivia Colantuono’s piece about other Beijing Olympian’s looks and past fashion at the Olympics!
