Release Roundup: Best Shows & Movies from January 2022
Every month a whole new slew of movies and television shows are released on various platforms and it can be hard to tell which ones are worth the watch. If this sounds like a dilemma you face, look no further. Here are five shows and movies that are worth the watch.
Archive 81
Archive 81 is a supernatural, thriller mystery show that follows a video archivist named Dan Turner, who is hired to restore video tapes from a director named Melody who died 25 years prior. As he digs deeper in, Dan figures out that the tapes are about a demonic cult the director believed was active in the apartment building where she died. The series is inspired by a found footage horror podcast of the same name. If you’re looking for something creepy that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this series is perfect for you.
The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age is a period piece drama set in 1882 that follows a young woman named Marian Brook, along with her new friend Peggy Scott, who moves from rural Pennsylvania to New York City to live with Marion’s traditional, wealthy aunts after her father passes away. This drama displays the tug between old and new, traditional and modern, when they introduce the opulent new neighbors, the Russell family who have made their money through building railroads. This historical drama is great for fans of Downton Abbey as it was originally planned to be a prequel to the show.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window is a Netflix show that’s a dark parody of stereotypical mystery shows and it follows a grieving woman named Anna who believes she may have witnessed a murder involving her new neighbor. No one will take her claims seriously because of her tendency to mix alcohol and medications which causes her to have hallucinations. Anna takes it upon herself to investigate the mystery of the murder. The combination of suspense and absurdity of some of the plot makes this series a compelling watch.
Scream 5
If you enjoy sequels to iconic horror movies, Scream 5 will be right up your alley. Scream 5 follows a new group of teenagers, who all have connections to the teenagers from the original film, as they battle the new person posing as Ghostface and terrorizing their town. Dewey Riley, Gale Weathers, and Sidney Prescott from the original Scream all return in this sequel to help end the reign of Ghostface once and for all. This film is a fun, creepy watch filled with the typical plot twists and jump scares in slasher films.
The 355
The 355 is a female centric spy film where a CIA agent named Mason “Mace” Brown has to work with a German agent Marie Schmidt, former MI6 agent and tech specialist Khadijah Adiyeme, and a Colombian psychologist Graciela Rivera to track down and retrieve a top secret weapon that is stolen by mercenaries. The group also has to deal with a mysterious woman named Lin Mi Sheng who is following them through every step. Although some plot points of this film have been done before, the all-female team and diverse casting help to make it different from other spy movies.
Whether you’re looking for something more serious or fun and thrill filled, at least one of these titles will grab your attention.
