The Fashion Community Stands with Ukraine
The news of what Ukrainians are experiencing is devastating. The Russian invasion has taken a toll on the country with thousands of casualties including civilians and children. For more information about what is happening in Ukraine, you can read Emily White’s piece about the U.S involvement to learn about the history between Russia and Ukraine.
It’s heartbreaking to see Ukrainians struggle and be forced to leave their homes while we sit and watch. But, people are still doing what they can to show their support for Ukraine even from overseas; either through monetary donations or purchasing Ukrainian products and goods. Many celebrities, including Bella Hadid’s donation of her fashion week earnings, are also matching donations up to a few million dollars to give to organizations that help Ukrainian refugees.
The fashion community is also coming together to do their part and help Ukraine by taking it a step further. Brands like Nike, Chanel, H&M and so many others have either closed stores in Russia or suspended partnerships and sales with Russia.
Here is a list of the fashion brands that are showing their support for Ukraine.
Adidas suspended their partnership with the Football Union of Russian, while also donating €100,000 (about $110,915) worth of clothing and footwear to organizations that help Ukrainian refugees.
H&M closed its 170 stores in Russia and paused all sales. They released a statement claiming that the “H&M Group is deeply concerned about the tragic developments in Ukraine and stand with all the people who are suffering.”
Chanel suspended all e-commerce in Russia and closed its stores there. They released on their Instagram that they “strongly stand for peace and for all people impacted by the war in Ukraine.”
Nike made all online and in-app purchases unavailable in Russia. Many other brands closed their stores or stopped sales in Russia after Vogue Ukraine urged major fashion companies to do so.
Even more fashion brands have or continue to donate money to support organizations and non-profits that benefit Ukrainians.
The LVMH group donated €5 million (about $6,582,105) to the International Committee of the Red Cross to help victims.
Louis Vuitton also donated €1 million (about $1.09 million), to UNICEF (The United Nations Children’s Fund). They help children around the world who experience tragedies or disadvantages.
Skims is making a donation to World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that makes and distributes meals after natural disasters or world events such as this.
Valentino donated €500,000 (about $543,000) to UNHCR, otherwise known as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They give immediate aid to refugees and others who need help. They also protect them as mandated by the UN.
Many fashion brands are also doing everything they can to protect their employees and staff within Ukraine. Puma is also offering financial aid and housing to its employees in Western Ukraine.
So many others are doing their part and helping or donating where they can. Organizations like the UNHCR, UNICEF, and the ICRC are stepping up to help Ukrainians in their time of need. Donating a few dollars or purchasing Ukrainian products can make a huge difference.
