If you have not already heard, Little Women and Ladybird director, Greta Gerwig, is directing the film, and she found her Barbie dream girl in Margot Robbie, the actress known for playing Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Many other all-star actors that will appear in the Barbie film, including Ugly Betty star America Ferrara, Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu, Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon, X-Men Apocalypse star Alexandra Shipp, Superbad star Michael Cera, and comedian and Elf star Will Ferrell. With this ensemble, the movie already looks promising. According to British Vogue, the film will center on a doll living in Barbieland who’s forced to leave due to her so-called imperfections, setting off on an adventure in the real world and discovering along the way that perfection can only truly be found within.

When asked about the role in an interview with British Vogue in June of 2021, Robbie mentioned, “It comes with a lot of baggage . . . And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.”
If you grew up loving Barbie and the animated movies that she starred in such as Barbie as Rapunzel, Barbie of Swan Lake, Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus, Barbie: Fairytopia, and all the many other films, then I know you are just as excited for this film, if not more excited to see her and her Barbieland buddies in (live) action.
