Fashion: From Start to Finish

Ever wonder what the process is like (from start to finish) of making garments? Four aspiring designers have shared their inspiration for some of their latest pieces, as well as the process of their garments.

Here are some quotes from each of the designers regarding their work.

Siana-Lee Valdez

“This bag was a literal miracle. I have little sewing experience, and this was my first time working with faux leather and creating a puffer style. Both were very challenging to do but I am happy I stuck it out and the finished result came out way better than I expected,” Valdez says. “This took me about 3 days to do, in total 10 hours. The Inspo was ‘futuristic + art’.”

“The inspo for my design was a female Dominican contemporary artist named Julianna Cepeda. The color is one of my favorites and I love the idea of the unconventional so it was fun making this hat. I hand sewed the fur tracks as if I was sewing a wig. It took about 2-3 hours to make,” says Valdez.

Lien Phan

“The inspo behind this design was the style from the poodle skirt in the 50s,” says Phan. “Taking that style, I made it more modern by shortening the length of the skirt and giving the top a little twist to the design.”

Natasha Castano

“The inspo behind this design was to give a vintage look in a newer way by giving you a pop of color by using a lavender color with front pockets and a zipper front,” says Castano.

Tamia Toussaint

“The inspo for this outfit was Pierre Cardin, who was known for his Space Age aesthetic,” says Toussaint. “I decided to revamp his cut-out circle dress into a top/jacket with pants and train.”

These pieces were designed and created by the LIM Fashion Design Club for their 2022 Fashion Show Collection.
