I Went To Camp Flog Gnaw So You Didn’t Have To

This was my first time attending a festival and I had the time of my life. When I saw that there would be a Camp Flog Gnaw this year, I got very excited because this is the first one since 2019 due to COVID-19. Since this was my first time at a music festival, I got VIP tickets as they have exclusive sections to watch the artists, food, and carnival games.

The festival features a variety of carnival games, rides, food vendors, and notable artists at the Dodger Stadium parking lot. Prior to 2016, the festival had only been held for one day and it has always been held on a weekend. There is no specific date(s) on which Camp Flog Gnaw is held. However, past carnivals have been held at either the end of October or the middle of November (with the exception of the first festival, held on September 30, 2012).

Day 1:

On the first day, there was so much stuff to do. There were at least 20 rides and games that I wanted to go to. But first, I had to get into the merch line since there were so many people there when it opened. Luckily, they had a VIP section in line because I would not wait 3 hours to get a shirt and a hat.

After I got out of the merch line, I decided to see the times the artists I wanted to see came on.  There were five artists that I wanted to watch, Ice Spice, Kevin Abstract, Kali Uchis, Tyler, the Creator, and The Hillbillies (Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem).

I only got to see 3 of the artists since there were so many people in the VIP area.  I saw Kali Uchis, Tyler, the Creator, and The Hillbillies.

Kali Uchis

This was my second time seeing Kali Uchis perform since I’ve been to one of her concerts. I was in the front section of the VIP area and I had such a good time there.

She had one of the best performances that I've seen. She played all her best songs that everybody knew and all you could hear was just people singing along. I was very excited to hear her sing Muñekita and Telepatía. When I listened to her start with Muñekita, I started to cry because that is one of my favorite songs by her.

Tyler, the Creator

Watching Tyler, the Creator perform again, I was so happy. When I first saw him, I wasn’t on the floor area, but now I had the chance to witness what it felt like being there.

Tyler is one of my favorite artists and I kept jumping up and down when he would play my favorite songs: New Magic Wand, EARFQUAKE, She, Yonkers, and LUMBERJACK.

I got a little scared when he played New Magic Wand since they always do a mosh pit to that song. So, I asked a girl if I could hold onto her and luckily, she said it was okay because I would’ve come out of the mosh pit all messed up.

This performance has to be one of my favorites from him because he made sure that the crowd was okay since everyone was pushing each other.

This was the last show of the first night. This was the first time I have seen Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem perform. I have been a fan of Kendrick Lamar’s music since I grew up listening to him, but I‘ve only heard a few songs from Baby Keem before this performance.

I have to say that they put on one of the best performances I have seen all night and I would like to see them both in concert in the future.

Day 2:

When I woke up the second day, I was so sore because of how much I was jumping and walking. My friends and I decided to be at the festival by 3 p.m. and not when it opened since all of the artists that we wanted to see were playing later.

When we arrived, so many people were saving their spots for PinkPantheress, Lil Yachty, Dominic Fike, and Rex Orange County. I only wanted to see PinkPantheress, Dominic Fike, Lil Yachty, and Cuco.

Since the artists I wanted to see were on separate stages, I had to sprint to the other side of the parking lot to see the artists I wanted to see. I only got to see PinkPantheress, Dominic Fike, Rex Orange County, and Cuco. I was sad I didn’t see Lil Yachty because I know more of his songs than Rex Orange County.

I’ve only heard a couple of her songs from their popularity on TikTok. Since my sisters love her, I promised to record her performance and send them pictures.

Even though I’ve only heard a few of her songs, I definitely like her vibe and her music. I suggest people check her out and listen to her music.

CUCO

Cuco has to be one of my top artists that I listen to constantly. I have been listening to him since 2015. When I listen to his music, I feel connected to it because I feel we both have the same experiences with love and life.

I only got to see a part of his performance since the stage he was performing on was on the other side of where Rex Orange County was playing.

Since I only saw two songs that he performed, I was so excited to hear Lo Que Siento. That has to be one of my favorite songs he sings because I love how he sounds on it and the trumpet solo that he has at the end of the song. I started crying when I heard that song because I had been waiting to hear him sing and play the trumpet live. Of all the performances I saw that day, he has to be one of my favorites because the crowd was singing along and it felt like I was home.

My overall experience with the whole festival was 50/50. I got VIP tickets, but it felt like I got general admission because so many people were in the VIP sections. One thing that I would change about my experience for the future is that I would have to maximize my time and secure what artists I want to see.

A few things that I liked about the festival was that we had our own bathrooms, a lot of food options, and our section for the big stages was divided in half.
