A No Pants, Pants Look That’s Giving Legs
Fashion’s Autumn/Winter ‘23 pantless trend most definitely has legs. It is beyond what we know as underwear-as-outerwear. It’s more subversive, shocking, and exciting.
“If I were younger, I would go out in panties,” said Miuccia Prada after the Miu Miu A/W ‘23 show.
Although this seems like an extreme fashion choice, underwear as pants isn’t all that new. Vivienne Westwood dominated the look in her Autumn/Winter ‘89 collection which featured a bodysuit with fig leaves at the crotch area.
“The concept of underwear-as-outerwear is most commonly associated with the 1980s,” according to the Museum at FIT’s Exposed: A History of Lingerie exhibition from 2014.
The normalcy of wearing underwear in public, established in the 80’s, is making a comeback. Pantless looks are super flattering without showing too much. The trend itself is an extension of many popular looks. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Emily Ratajakowski have all been seen in their own interpretation of this trend.
Inspired by traditional dance-wear, sheer underwear-esque pieces are designed to be worn as everyday clothes with edge.
“People are more expressive about being comfortable in their bodies, no matter what stage they’re in,” says Find Me Now co-founder Stephanie Callahan. With a trend like this, confidence is key.
So if you plan on buying any pants this fall, don’t.
