Royel Otis Rocks Brooklyn Steel: Concert Review
Nothing says work night like an indie concert in the middle of Brooklyn, am I right?
To those who saw Royel Otis at Brooklyn Steel last Thursday, you know that the Friday morning yawns from your desk were well worth it.
The Aussie duo opened the concert with their hit, “Heading For The Door,” but left the audience wanting to do anything but. By the second song, the crowd was fully locked in, with girls fawning over Otis Pavlovic and guys choosing to not get a second beer.
This tour was meant to showcase their debut album, PRATTS & PAIN, and it did just that. The pair is well-known for their covers of The Cranberries’ “Linger,” and “Murder On The Dancefloor,” by Sophie Ellis- Bextor, but this record set them apart as original artists. Hits like “Daisy Chain” and “Claw Foot” fit perfectly into the indie pop genre that the band has broken into.
About halfway through the show, the two performed their new track, “If Our Love Is Dead,” and it did not disappoint. Otis Pavlovic and Royel Maddell somehow sounded better live than they did in the studio—proving their raw, natural talents. Their calm and inviting stage presence only added to the experience.
Still, there is no denying the true star of the show, the opening act, Friko. The up-and-coming rockers quite literally set the stage for Royel Otis, with an alternative, indie-infused sound, far different from anything of its kind.
I walked into the venue a first-time listener and left a fan. Perhaps the best moment of the night was their rendition of Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi.” The group executed the piece flawlessly, while also giving insight of some of their biggest musical inspirations.
So, if you have the opportunity to see Royel Otis or Friko—regardless if you have to show up to work tired, late, or not at all—make sure to attend the show.
