Luke Hemmings “Shakes” It Up With New Single
5 Seconds of Summer frontman Luke Hemmings released a new single, “Shakes,” at the beginning of March. With the release of this song, he announced an upcoming solo EP, boy, set to hit streaming services on April 26th.

This is not Hemmings’ first foray into a solo career. The Australian singer released an album titled When Facing the Things We Turn Away From in 2021. Hemmings is famously the lead singer of pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, which rose to fame in 2014 with the release of their self-titled album.
During their rise to fame, 5 Seconds of Summer, or 5SOS as fans referred to them, was heavily compared to the famous British boyband One Direction, who were considered a more preppy, pop version of their Aussie counterpart. 5SOS spent time on the road with One Direction as an opening act for three of their tours from 2013-2015. This tour exposure allowed 5SOS to gain international recognition and increased their popularity tenfold.

Since its conception, 5SOS has released five studio albums and multiple EPs. They have had international success, with over 10 million albums sold and 7 billion song streams across music streaming sites–making them one of the most successful Australian music acts in history.
As the band members—Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin—age, they have each formed their identities as public figures outside the band. Irwin was the first of the members to venture into the solo space, with his debut album Superbloom released in 2020. Yet, they still find time to reconnect with the band and its fans, as they did this past summer when they embarked on the 5 Seconds of Summer Show to celebrate a decade of the band.
Hemmings was always the mastermind behind the band. At 14, he recruited Hood and Clifford to help him post YouTube covers of popular songs back in 2011, eventually adding Irwin to the lineup as well. The band has started to release albums with less frequency as all members explore new facets of both their personal and professional lives.
With Hemmings now focusing on his solo career, he has also graced fans with a new music video to accompany his single “Shakes.” The singer promises more music videos to go along with his upcoming EP and tells fans that they will all tie together in an EP that perfectly encompasses the feelings of melancholy and longing one experiences when on the road or emotionally exhausted.
