S/S 2020 PFW Accessories Roundup
This past Paris Fashion Week, there were plenty of retro accessory trends that made a comeback as well as plenty of new trends that came to light.
There were recurring themes of casual bohemian and ‘70s looks. In fact, fashion month showed us that the decade has returned with a vengeance. At PFW, sandals were a big hit given that they tied in perfectly with the laid-back theme. The Valentino show only included sandals, many of which gave off an Ancient Grecian vibe with rope-like detailing around the foot. We saw the reoccurrence of gladiator style sandals at Hermès, where took they a more neutral route with black, white, browns and greens. The bohemian look also appeared at Cédric Charlier, with shoes that included intricate detailing coin-like embellishments.
For S/S 2020, extravagant chandelier earrings will be a major hit. These bold accessories are the perfect way to start next season with a touch of drama. Stella McCartney incorporated these statement pieces in her collection with different shapes in neutral tones and vibrant greens and oranges, as well as crochet earrings that gave off perfect hippie vibes for spring. Another collection that gave off ‘70s feels was Isabel Marant. The vibrant, free-spirited collection showcased these statement gems in an array of colors—perfect for spring. At the Christian Wijnants show, the collection was bursting with color, yet the models exclusively wore black beaded chandelier earrings, proving that even black can be involved in your bright spring wardrobe.
Another trend that came back on the runway was skinny black sunglasses. Little black cat-eye sunnies have been a trend for a while, but the trend remerged at shows like Balmain where over half of the models wore this accessory, giving off the ultimate cool girl vibe. Cat-eye sunnies also appeared at Ingie Paris. Another collection where we saw see these sunnies grace the runway was at Rokh. With his collection, we not only saw the black cat-eye, but also skinny oval glasses with black frames. They played with ‘70s and ‘90s inspired looks.
Do you want a new statement piece? Well, it’s out with the mini bags and in with the big bags for spring. This season, big bags made an appearance at the Victoria/Tomas and Joseph shows, and cross-body bags were seen at Akris. With these trends coming up for spring, we should start arranging our closets for these vibrant, patterned and spacious bags.
If you’re a hat person, maybe this accessory seen on the runway will excite you. The large floppy hat is no stranger to the spring season, and at Koché, they were pink and covered in feathers, oversized enough to shield the face. Another collection where we saw these dramatic hats was at Capucci, which featured enlarged pink bows on floppy hats. The Issey Miyake show was theatrical and innovative and included paper-like floppy hats and other headwear such as layered pieces and over-the-top tall straw hats.
