Fifty Shades of Spiders? Dakota Johnson To Join The MCU

All the rumors are true, Dakota Johnson is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After No Way Home (2021) generated $1.74 Billion in box office revenue, there is no way that the Spider-Verse days are over. However, things are looking a little different this time.

Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is set to play ‘Madame Web’ in an upcoming Spider-Verse spinoff film. The film is going to be produced by Sony Pictures like Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man, whereas Tom Holland’s was Columbia Pictures. This has left fans wondering if Garfield will make another return to the MCU after his cameo alongside Holland and Tobey Maguire in No Way Home.

In the original 1980 comics, Johnson's character ‘Madame Web’ is a mutant clairvoyant. She is known for predicting the future for Peter Parker. Rather than being portrayed as a mentor for the Spider-men, Dakota’s character will be the first female superhero in the Spider-Verse, which is major for the MCU. The film is set to be directed by S.J. Clarkson. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are co-writing the movie as well.

It is uncertain if Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or any other MCU characters will be joining the cast. However, we would love to see Johnson join Garfield, considering one of her earliest roles was in The Social Network (2010), which he starred in. The two were also seen reuniting in a recent Vanity Fair video. Could it possibly be a hint? Amongst all our burning questions, one thing is for sure: we can start calling Dakota Johnson ‘Madame Web.’

Johnson’s breakout films were the Fifty Shades Trilogy alongside Jamie Dornan. Since then, she has starred in How To Be Single (2016), The Lost Daughter (2021), and The High Note (2020). However, fame is nothing new to the actress. Being the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, you could say that acting is in her DNA.

We are so excited to see how Johnson and ‘Madame Web’ are going to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only is it Dakota Johnson’s first time starring a film like this, but having a female superhero is also a first for the Spider-Verse. We’ll be re-watching the whole MCU timeline until further notice.
