Photo Series: Spiraling Down My Madness

When we were younger, everything seemed possible. Whether it be flying, being a princess or a prince, or being able to talk to animals—nothing seemed to stop our imaginations. Most of these ideas came from the stories we read which dazzled us and broadened our imaginations. One of those stories for me was Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

I grew up loving the out-of-the-box characters that came to life with every page I turned, and the scenes I watched in both Disney films. Alice was rebellious and looked at life the way all children do, with tremendous curiosity and a little bit of madness here and there.

After rediscovering how much my little sister and I loved the story, I was inspired to write a poem along with a photo series inspired by the classic story. The models are wearing clothes that match the dark Tim Burton vibe of the 2010 film version starring Johnny Depp.

The color scheme consists of deep reds, whites, creams, and blacks, as well as prints such as plaid, polka dots, and stripes. Each of the outfits contains a small touch of “madness,” where it might not make sense, yet still makes the outfit.

Here is “Spiraling Down My Madness,” the poem and the photo series.

There was once was a story that I read

About the things In life I dread

Growing up, and getting older

Watching the world grow bitter and colder

I started to believe in the impossible things

Houses made out of clouds, and life-size rings

Talking cats, magical treats,

Painting white roses red, and voluminous pleats

The madness in me grew stronger

And I still did not want to grow up, not for much longer

I loved to watch the things that did not make sense

It made the realities in life appear a little less dense

I dreamed of a rabbit hole of which I could escape

A weirder imagination I would reshape

Such places do not exist, so I took my madness, and gave it a twist

I twisted and twisted until I was sure,

That I would continue spiraling down my madness,

now, and forevermore.
