Funky and Futuristic: How to Implement the Space-Age Trend in Your Home Decor
Fashion trends play a big part in the design and style of a home decor item. If florals are a big hit for spring and summer clothing, you can expect to see new floral home decor from your favorite retailers as well. The same goes for colors; just as the Pantone color of the year is trending on the runway, it is also trending in the home fashions area.
Space-age and futuristic-like fashion has also been trending like crazy, both on and off the runway. If you’re a fan of this type of fashion/aesthetic and you love to redecorate your home or room every couple of months, here are some futuristic home decor ideas for different home categories. We promise to give you all the futuristic, Dune-Esque vibes you are desperately searching for.

MIRRORS

Mirrors are a necessity—especially full-body ones to make sure your entire outfit can be judged accordingly. We have been loving silver hardware mirrors and other home decor pieces, but you can definitely still achieve that futuristic vibe by going with gold, copper, or any other color hardware.
The Lightology mirror (pictured left) definitely gives you that option. Lipstick mirrors (pictured in the middle) were also super popular in the 70s, which was a decade full of Space-age fashion and futuristic home decor. These mirrors are not easy to find and can be quite expensive—but are totally worth it. There are also many oval mirrors out there that give off a similar vibe. The CB2 mirror (pictured right) is for all the people out there that love this aesthetic but are still a bit more of a mid-century modern person.
CHAIRS & SEATING

Chairs and seating pieces are crucial when decorating any space. For this particular aesthetic, the options are endless. Kim Kardashian was seen sitting in a very futuristic white rocking chair, similar to one we found on Finish Design Shop, that retails for a whopping $647 (pictured left). The chair definitely fits the Space-age vibe, so anything remotely similar will do.
Togo couches (pictured right) were everywhere in 2020, and they’re still quite popular. While these might not necessarily fit the Space-age aesthetic, they definitely scream futuristic. These are extremely expensive—but there are (slightly) cheaper dupes out there from Amazon & even Hobby Lobby.
NIgHTSTANDS & SIDE TABLES

Many may not find a nightstand or side table to be a piece that is crucial to any bedroom or living space, but it can come in handy, especially when you need a spot to rest your second (or third) coffee of the day.
For the futuristic/Space-age aesthetic, silver, glass, metal, and any side table that is 70s inspired can work perfectly. Brands like CB2 carry many nightstands and side tables that fit this vibe and are a little bit cheaper than others.
COUCHES

Obviously, there cannot be a home decor article without the mention of couches because let’s face it—they are the next best thing besides our beds. We can sit, sleep, eat, and watch our favorite movies and TV shows on them, while also having a place to hold our drinks, charge our phones, and simply enjoy our time.
The LED sofa (pictured left) from Lumens is right out of a futuristic Sci-Fi film. While it does cost a pretty penny, it is a super fun way to play with the aesthetic, while investing in a piece that will probably still be trending in a couple of years. There are also many home retailers that sell abstract/ futuristic shaped couches, which are probably a lot (or a little bit) cheaper than $2,160.
BEDDING

One of the most basic home necessities would be bedding. You can go really simple in the bedding department when it comes to futuristic style because a lot of the aesthetic is based around solid colors— so any singular colored bedding would go well. But, if you really want to stick to the Space-age-Esque aesthetic, we would absolutely suggest going for some metallic bedding, or even just a solid-colored silky duvet cover and pillowcase set.
Walmart has silky bedding for as little as $35. If you would much rather go for an all-white look, that is totally fine too. The look of an all-white bedspread reminds us of clouds—which is what we love to imagine we’re sleeping on.
COFFEE TABLES
SOURCE: EURO LIVING, ITALY DESIGN, & 1ST DIBS
Coffee tables are an easy way to bring a little bit of extra spice into a plain, empty living area. You can decorate it with some cute coffee table books and a sculpture and you are good to go. There are a lot of coffee table options, especially when it comes to the material that it is made out of; wood, glass, plastic—and just about everything else are on that list.
The glass and plastic/ glossy white coffee tables are what we think of when we imagine the futuristic style, but that might not be your take on the aesthetic. So, if you prefer black stained wood or even stainless steel, brands like Crate & Barrel and Restoration Hardware have pieces that match the aesthetic, while varying in style.
LIGHTING

Lamps are obviously our source of light for the most part—so why not have a really unique, Space-age-approved lamp? You really do not need to go too crazy with this category either, since many industrial and mid-century modern-looking lamps actually fit the futuristic aesthetic pretty well.
Many of the futuristic-looking lamps are—you guessed it—super expensive, so going with cheaper options from cheaper brands like IKEA and Walmart would be your best bet here.
There are a lot of home decor options out there, but for this type of aesthetic—the cooler the better. Now, we know many of the more unique options are also the most expensive ones, so this is where thrifting and secondhand shopping might do you some good.
People give away the coolest pieces—so we would definitely recommend checking out thrift stores, and even Facebook Marketplace before splurging on a piece for your home/living space. Either way, the futuristic/Space-age aesthetic can be fun to implement into your personal style and your home decor as well. So give it a try, who knows, it might end up being your favorite.
