The Dog Days Are Over: Florence + The Machine’s New Album “Dance Fever”
If you’re a fan of stunning visuals, powerhouse songs you can sing every word to, or dancing around your room barefoot—then we have great news for you. English indie-rock/pop artist Florence and the Machine is back with her fifth album, Dance Fever, a passion project she recorded in London throughout the pandemic. The album is set to release on May 13th, 2022.
Like all Florence and the Machine records, this one has an extensive list of credentials, with producers like Jack Antonoff (lead singer of Bleachers) and Dave Bayley of the alt-rock band, Glass Animals. As a result, Welch is coming out with the album we’ve all been waiting for, amidst the unprecedented stress, lockdowns, and global conflict of 2022.
This album represents the essence of Welch’s music and its ability to get listeners of all kinds up and dancing with a smile on their faces. According to Pitchfork, Dance Fever was directly inspired by Florence’s fascination with choreomania, a phenomenon hailing from the Renaissance era where people danced themselves to the point of exhaustion or even death.
After feeling so pent up in quarantine, Dance Fever is the album we need to “Shake It Out.” Along with choreomania, Welch also took inspiration from pre-Raphaelite art as well as folk horror films The Wicker Man and Midsommar when making this album. We see this influence the most in the music videos Welch is releasing alongside each single.
While we may not be able to get our hands on the full album until its release on May 13th, Florence has already released three singles off the album, each with a music video directed by Autumn de Wilde more magical than the next.
Until the album's release, we’ll be waiting patiently for the Spotify notification and playing her three singles on repeat. Given the global climate, Florence and the Machine’s next record could not come at a better time, giving listeners the release we all need right about now.
