Schiaparelli Haute Couture S/S’23: Looks Were Served On and Off the Runway
The Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2023 show took place this past Monday, January 22nd in Paris, France. The collection certainly made an impression but the attendees were what caught the internet’s attention.
Cosmetic brand owner Kylie Jenner and rapper Doja Cat arrived at the Schiaparelli show in head-turning looks. Jenner caught the attention of PETA raising concerns of “glamorizing hunting,” with a lion mane attached to her dress. Meanwhile, Doja Cat made a bold choice of head-to-toe red Swarovski crystals serving a camp look.
Let’s take a dive into the two looks.
Kylie Jenner: Who Roared Louder?
Kylie Jenner sat front row wearing a custom black, strapless Schiaparelli gown, attached to the dress was a faux lion’s head with a full mane. But, Jenner wasn’t the only one who arrived with a lion by her side.
Irina Shayk walked the runway in the exact same outfit, which from the look on Jenner’s face it did not seemed planned.
Jenner kept her makeup quite simple to keep the attention on the large lion mane on her side. Her bronze skin and nude lip complemented her high-retro style ponytail and the minimal amount of jewelry.
PETA Backlash
PETA made a statement regarding the dress stating the look, “celebrates the beauty of wild animals and may be a statement against trophy hunting, in which lions and wolves are torn apart to satisfy human egotism.”
Irina Shayk defended the dress on Instagram stating, “I support these incredible artists who worked tirelessly, with their hands, using wool, silk, and foam, to sculpt this embroidered Lion, and image of Pride, an image that @schiaparelli invokes while exploring themes of strength. I am honored to have been called on as well to lend my art as a woman to this @danielroseberry.”
Jenner has not made a statement regarding PETA’s backlash, however, in her Instagram caption she mentioned the lion mane is faux fur. The caption reads, “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. thank you @danielroseberry and @schiaparelli for such a special morning. wow i loved wearing this faux art creation constructed by hand using manmade materials. beautiful beautiful.”
doja CAt: Crimson camp
Rapper Doja Cat arrived covered, head to toe in 30,000 crimson red Swarovski crystals to match her strapless crimson red dress. This extravagant look was created by Pat McGrath, which they later named “Doja’s Inferno.” Which was meant to evoke the feeling of a live sculpture sitting in the front row.
McGrath states in their Instagram caption how much of a pleasure it was to work with both Doja Cat and Daniel Roseberry.
They go on to explain Doja’s immense amount of patience; the look took 4 hours and 58 minutes to create. The 30,000 Swarovski crystals were hand-applied which resulted in a final product that was a “magical, mesmerizing masterpiece of sparkling brilliance.”
“Doja’s Inferno” is a way for the rapper to express herself. She recalls a time in middle school where an administer questioned her style. They told her to, “Get that crap off of your face. Nobody wants to see that. Why do you dress like this? What’s the point of dressing like this? You’re such a distraction.”
Doja explains to Elle she never liked the way she looked and felt she never fit in as a child.
“I felt like I stuck out all the time, and I didn’t like it. It was a strange time,” Doja tells Elle.
Now as an adult she has embraced her risk-taking style and is no longer affected by the comments of others.
