Met Gala 2023: Full Carpet Recap

Earlier this week fashion lovers celebrated their favorite time of year, the Met Gala. Every first Monday of May the Met Gala holds a charity event that kicks off a new fashion exhibit at The Met. A guest list is curated of different designers and celebrities to join in the event and dawn some high fashion looks to fit the theme of each year’s gala.

This year, the theme of the Met Gala was “in honor of Karl,” honoring the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld was a controversial, but influential figure in the fashion industry, working with fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, and Chloe. With such a fashion inspiration as the honoree of this year’s Met Gala, it is no surprise that this year’s looks lived up to his name. Let’s take a look at what some of your favorite celebrities were wearing!

Rhianna and A$ap Rocky

This year, Rhianna sported a white Valentino gown, accompanied by a white rose coat and sunglasses with their own set of eyelashes. A$AP Rocky— in Gucci— paid homage to a classic Lagerfeld look, with a black blazer, white button down, and a tartan kilt. Rocky added a more modern take to the kilt, donning stacked Gucci belts as well as a pair of jeans underneath the kilt.

Cardi B

Rapper Cardi B wore a black Chenpeng tuxedo gown with roses on the bodice and skirt, accompanied by black gloves and a headband.

Jenna Ortega

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega channels her inner Wednesday Addams in her gothic look designed by Thom Browne. She wore a lace-up corset, knee-high socks, and a dramatic skirt. She accessorized with a schoolgirl bow, chains, and pearls.

Pedro Pascal

The Last of Us and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal stood out in a sea of black and white with a bright red Valentino coat, a matching poplin shirt, a black tie, and very short shorts.

Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid wore a custom sheer corset gown designed by Givenchy, accessorized with LAGOS jewelry.

Kendall Jenner

Kendal Jenner had walked in many of Lagerfeld’s shows, so fans were expecting the model to deliver a stunning look and she definitely did. Jenner worked with Marc Jacobs to create a look to honor Lagerfeld and took inspiration from an archival swimwear design from the ‘90s. On the carpet, she wore a sequin bodysuit with a cape and collar to complete the look.

Kim Kardashian

Lagerfeld loved pearls, so Kim Kardashian decided she wanted to be “dripping in pearls,” as she wore a custom Schiaparelli ensemble with numerous pearls draped over a tan corset. Fans of Kardashian have pointed out that she may have been paying homage to a photo shoot from an early season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Anne Hathaway

The Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway worked with Versace to channel Lagerfeld in a tweed safety pin dress with floral and pearl accents, completed with a pair of tweed fingerless gloves.

Donatella Versace

Donatella Versace came in a custom Atelier Versace in Lagerfeld’s least favorite color—pink.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez also came in Lagerfeld’s least favorite color. She sported a pink and black Ralph Lauren gown with a halter neckline that flowed into two tails and a velour cut-out midsection. She wore a silk skirt with a long train and topped it all off with a fascinator.

Doja Cat

Doja Cat is no stranger to out-of-the-ordinary, eye-catching looks, and this year’s Met Gala was no different. She honored Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, in a backless Oscar de la Renta hooded gown that flowed into a feathered train. Aside from the prosthetic makeup, the rapper completed her look with cat ears on the hood of her gown.

Lil Nas X

Like Doja Cat, Lil Nas X is familiar with turning heads with his looks. He showed up to the Met in nothing but a metallic Dior thong, covered head to toe in silver body paint, pearls, and crystals. He completed his look—which one can assume was also in honor of Choupette—with a set of whiskers.

JAred Leto

Choupette was clearly a popular point of reference for celebrities, just as he was for Jared Leto. The actor and musician showed up in a full Choupette costume, which he took off upon entering the Met. He then donned an all-black outfit equipped with an embellished cape.
