The New Gucci: Sabato De Sarno's Debut

After eight years with the maximalist take from Alessandro Michele, Gucci appointed a new creative director in January, Sabato De Sarno. Eight months later, his debut collection was revealed at Milan Fashion Week. The Italian designer has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Prada and Valentino, and has made a big break replacing the House’s previous director who brought in a new era for Gucci.

Alessandro Michele, who was the creative director since 2002, left Gucci in November of last year with the statement, “There are times when paths part ways because of the different perspectives each one of us may have. Today an extraordinary journey ends for me, lasting more than twenty years, within a company to which I have tirelessly dedicated all my love and creative passion.”

The CEO, François-Henri Pinault, of the Luxury house’s parent company, Kering, added as well stating, “The road that Gucci and Alessandro walked together over the past years is unique and will remain as an outstanding moment in the history of the House… His passion, his imagination, his ingenuity, and his culture put Gucci center stage, where its place is.”

Although Alessandro can be credited for what the brand has built today, Sabato is very excited about the future of Gucci. After he was appointed as the new creative director, he made a statement as well: "I am proud to join a House with such an extraordinary history and heritage, that over the years has been able to welcome and cherish values I believe in. I am touched and excited to contribute my creative vision for the brand.”

With the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, De Sarno has made a reinvention from Michele’s elaborate clothing and went back to Gucci’s roots with more classic styles. He wants to bring back the true essence of the company, grounded in confidence and elegance. In show notes, the director called the collection “a story of music and nights out, of sweat, dancing, and singing…a story of family, of kissing, lots and lots of kisses.”

People have a lot to say about this new step for Gucci, but it is mostly in a positive light. The world has become hopeful about what the brand will offer in the future as the first show by Sabato De Sarno was so promising. The collection gave a look into the history of fashion, while also staying true to modern standards. It left the viewers begging for more, waiting for the next season to see what is to come.
