I Went to Chappell Roan’s Midwest Princess Tour (and You Should Too)

I went to see Chappell Roan at a headlining concert of her Midwest Princess Tour, and it didn’t disappoint. The theme of the concert was mermaid, and everyone came dressed to kill in their under-the-sea attire. Roan herself took the stage in an iridescent ocean-inspired bodysuit outfitted with clam and starfish appliques and pearl beading.

I must say, out of all the concerts I have been to, Roan’s was filled with the highest energy and most love for the artist. It was an hour of singing and dancing along to her iconic songs including “Good Luck Babe” and “My Kink is Karma.

Roan is a huge voice for uplifting queer artists within all creative industries so at every headlining show, she hires local drag artists to perform as her openers instead of going the traditional route of hiring a band. This was a very unique part of the show as audience members were able to watch their performances, tip the drag queens, and have an interactive drag experience before Roan took the stage.

The concert kicked off with the up-tempo bop “Femininomenon” before transitioning into “Naked in Manhattan.” Roan did a phenomenal job of planning out a setlist to have a nice flow, with her party hits intermixed between slower songs like “California” and “Picture You.

I had the privilege of seeing this concert in Rogers, AR, near the University of Arkansas. One of the highlights of her performance was her cheerleader-inspired song “HOT TO GO!” when she brought out the dance and cheer spirit squads from the university. The song already requires audience participation as Roan has crafted a cheer to go along with her lyrics, but the addition of the local college sent the energy over the edge.

My personal favorite moment of the night was when Roan sang her unreleased song “Subway” which showcases her powerhouse live vocals as she belts out an emotional song detailing the one that got away.

From start to finish, this concert was a blast and allowed the audiences an immersive experience as they dressed up, participated in the show, and sang their hearts out.
