Become ‘Bewitched’ By Laufey's New Album
Laufey (lay-vay), or Lin Jónsdóttir is a 24-year-old Icelandic-Chinese singer and songwriter. What makes Laufey stand out from the crowd, other than her unique heritage, is her music.
It’s no secret that pop music tends to dominate all genres of music; however, Laufey is proudly bringing back a genre that has been “put away” by this generation. With her new album, Bewitched, the hopeless romantic is making her generation aware that jazz is truly timeless.
The album is a 14-track album with a running time of 48 minutes and 12 seconds. Including her pre-released singles “Bewitched,” “From The Start,” and “Promise,” the album follows up her first studio album, Everything I Know About Love released last year.
In a world where music is now mostly produced in the studio using technology, all of the back tracks on Laufey’s album are made by her. She is responsible for playing the piano, cello, and violin in her songs. However, the song “California and Me” features the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Lyrically, the songs, as with all of her music, are stories, feelings, and questions driven by her experiences surrounding love. She keeps her music authentic, never really experimenting outside of the jazz category. Track 11 titled “Misty” is a beautiful cover of “Misty” by Ella Fitzgerald—one of the biggest jazz influences in the world.
